Mr. Dick Roche, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, today (30 April 2007 announced the allocations to 86 Conservation projects around the country under the new Civic structures Conservation Grants Scheme.
‘I am very excited by this new initiative and particularly pleased at the highquality of the applications’ the Minister said. The Minister noted that the maximum grant level is €50,000 which ‘will make a significant contribution to many of the projects’
The Minister said that ‘The local interest in our heritage is shown by the variety of some of the buildings assisted’. These include the Lady Dawson Temple in Monaghan, the metal bridge at the Strawberry Beds, Dublin, the Battery Pier in Dun Laoighaire, a terrace of 1830’s Railings in Cork, the Market place in Wexford and many churches. I am happy that the work that will be carried out on these structures will help encourage increased pride in local heritage” said Minister Roche.
In conclusion the Minister noted that “the independent assessment panel commented on the very high quality of many of the applications”. This is a reflection of the growing body of experience of local communities in saving their heritage buildings.
