City drivers to get smart new petrol pitstop

THE country's biggest petrol station is to be built at the entrance to Dublin's Port Tunnel, writes Paul Melia.

The Statoil facility will be four times the size of a typical Irish service station.

Yesterday, the Dublin Port Company announced it would invest €7m and immediately begin building the station which would be fully open in January.

It will serve up to 10,000 trucks a day which use Dublin Port, along with 300,000 tourist cars each year and vehicles driven by the port's 4,000 staff.

The new facility will be open for truck refuelling from October, but not fully operational until January.

The development, described as the first integrated forecourt and truck park facility of its kind here, will include parking for 43 trucks; a trucker's lounge with games room, internet access and shower facilities; and a full restaurant.

The new station will provide relief for hard-pressed motorists who struggle to find a petrol station in the city. Running out of fuel is one of the biggest causes of M50 breakdowns.
