The Danish architect behind developer Sean Dunne’s proposed high rise scheme in Ballsbridge has said he took inspiration for the 37 storey tower from the Pepper Canister Church on Dublin’s Mount Street.
Ulrick Raysse was presenting his vision for the scheme to an An Bord Pleanala hearing on the application for the development, which began this morning in Croke Park.
The proposed controversial development is on the site of the former Jurys and Berkley Court hotels.
The planning board received a record 126 appeals in relation to the planning application. While several local residents and residents' groups have opposed the development, 87 of the appeals are in favour of the development.
Dublin City Council last March granted permission for the bulk of the development, including an 18 storey tower but rejected the 37-storey building on grounds of excessive height.
Mr Dunne is calling on the board to re-instate the 37-storey tower.
The hearing, chaired by inspector Tom Rabbette, will first hear submissions from those in favour of the scheme, 44 of whom will be represented by Tom Phillips and Associates. Gate Theatre Director Michael Colgan and public relations consultant Bill O’Herlihy are among those in favour of the development.
Mr Rabbette will then hear from those opposing the scheme, including billionaire businessman Dermot Desmond. The hearing is expected to last for at least two weeks.
