OPENED LAST week, Hamleys toy shop in Dundrum Town Centre – a branch of the famous London toy shop – has already run into problems with the local authority.
It was refused planning permission by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council to display six Hamleys signs on three elevations because they would be “visually unappealing”.
The first standalone Hamleys outside Regent Street, it was looking to erect six signs – four illuminated ones on the north-east and north-west elevations.
These would have been brushed stainless steel with Hamleys written in red and surrounded by gold stars.
On the south-west elevation they were looking for two non-illuminated signs, one with the Hamleys name on it and the other reading “Hamleys Toy Man”.
However, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council criticised the design, number and prominent location of the proposed signage, and said that in the absence of an overall strategy for signage in Dundrum Town Centre the proposal would be “inconsistent with existing signage within the Dundrum Town Centre” and would “detract from the visual amenities of the area and would set a poor precedent in the area”.

Old City, New Dreams 2007
Each year, The Dubliner magazine produces a week of debates, lectures and performances, loosely themed around life in the city.
The project is an opportunity for those attending to meet some of the more entertaining and original thinkers in the land ... and it's all completely free.
This year, Old City, New Dreams - sponsored by Dundrum Town Centre, with support from BT Ireland and Diageo - is being held in the Mill Theatre, Dundrum Town Centre, from June 25-29.
Each event lasts approximately one hour and there is a free Smirnoff cocktail reception between 8 and 9pm each evening. Attendees are welcome to come to the reception before or after the event they are coming to see.
Among the series of debates over the five days is - 'Nuclear Power is the only way to go'. Taking place at 9pm on Wednesday, 27th June, those attending are invited to join a host of heavyweight industry figures in an explosive debate about the future of Ireland's energy supply - can we afford to ignore nuclear energy? - or is it just too dangerous to contemplate?
Participants include -
* Davie Philip of Temple Bar's Cultivate Centre
* CND Ireland founder, Patrick Comerford
* David Horgan, MD of Petrel Resources oil exploration company - and
* Constantin Gurdgiev, the editor of Business and Finance.
The talk will be moderated by writer and broadcaster, Damien Kiberd.
