MINISTER John Browne has officially opened the completed Coastal Protection Works at St. Helen's Bay.
The €400,000 project was carried in partnership between the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, St. Helen's Bay Golf club and Wexford County Council.
Minister Browne said the scheme was funded by the Department under the NDP 2000-2006, with part funding from the European Regional Development fund and local funding, the work consisted of 225 lineal metres of rock revetment type rock armour and a set of access steps over the rock armour to facilitate a longstanding public access.
Approximately 6,000 tonnes of rock armour was used in constructing the coastal defences.
Work started in November 2006 and was completed in Spring 2007, and was carried out in two phases due to poor weather and sea conditions over Christmas, which disrupted shipping of the rock.
Difficulties with road access required that the stone be brought in by ship from Arklow Port.
