Dean Waste gets approval for major Dublin development

Dean Waste, the company controlled by businessman Tony Dean, has been granted planning permission for a major office and car park development in Dublin city centre.

The company plans to build an office block of up to ten storeys on Sheriff Street in Dublin 1. The main part of the development is an eight-storey ‘‘glazed atrium’’ with links to the ten-storey building. It also includes four levels of basement car parking with 314 spaces.

Dean’s plan will feature a restaurant and multimedia library at ground and first-floor level. Dublin City Council last week granted Dean Waste permission for the development, which will involve demolishing all the existing structures on the Sheriff Street site.

Dean Waste is the company behind A1 Waste, which has built a highly profitable business providing skips and collecting commercial and builders’ waste. The company had turnover of €26.5 million in the financial year to the end of July 2007, and made an operating profit of €12.3 million.

The profit figure included ‘‘other operating income’’ of €9.7 million, which is thought to relate to the disposal of its 51 per cent stake in the City Bin Company last year. At the end of July last year, Dean Waste had retained profits of €41.2 million and more than €14 million in cash on its balance sheet. The company employed 132 people last year. Its employment costs were €6.1 million and its directors shared more than €335,000 in remuneration.
