Galway campaigns for rail system

Campaigners for a light rail system in Galway will make a presentation to city councillors tomorrow about the proposed €200 million project, ahead of a consultant being appointed to carry out a feasibility study next month.

The Galway City Business Association, which has more than 200members, has thrown its weight behind the ‘Gluas’ project, which is also backed by the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG) and the Health Service Executive West.

The campaign group is proposing that a loan of €100 million be requested from the European Investment Bank and that the rest of the funds be generated from private investors and businesses based in Galway.

The Gluas group want to build a 21-kilometre network of three lines within three years, with between 50 and 64 stops serving the city and suburbs.

Galway City Council has set a deadline of Thursday for applications for a consultant to carry out a feasibility study on the project.

Professor Lesley Lewis, a British expert on light rail, who has researched the viability of a Galway system, said the system would not require the large-scale groundworks seen in Dublin during the building of the Luas tram system.
