The decision by Mayo County Council to grant Westport Credit Union planning permission for a development in Newport has been appealed to An Bord Pleanala.
Martin and Angela Corcoran and Rita Chambers all of George’s Street, Newport, submitted the appeal to the planning authority after permission was granted to Westport Credit Union to construct two ground level commercial units and two two-bedroom apartments along George’s Street.
The 0.025 hectare site where the development is to take place is flanked by both Corcoran’s Drapery business and Ms Chambers’s home. A portacabin had been used as a Credit Union on the site for several years.
The appeal was lodged on September 15. In their objection, Mr and Mrs Corcoran and Ms Chambers cited ground conditions, car parking facilities, flooding in the area and the depreciation of existing residential amenity as their main concerns.
The objection, submitted by KC Surveying Planning Consultants, said that both properties either side of the development would be affected by a lack of light. It added that properties on both sides have no foundations, and there was huge concern that the development of the site would seriously undermine their structural integrity.
Some years ago the Corcorans received compensation in court when Westport Credit Union cleared the site and the activity caused structural damage to their property.
