Cullen applies to keep helicopter pad

AUTHOR and Renault boss Bill Cullen has asked Bord Pleanala to allow him keep a landing pad for a helicopter at the back of his home in the heart of Killarney National Park.

Kerry County Council had refused permission for helicopters to land in the prime special amenity area between Mangerton and Torc Mountains, because it would adversely affect the natural environment and interfere with the character of the area.

But the author of 'It's a Long Way from Penny Apples' has appealed the decision to Bord Pleanala.

In a submission, Glencullen Properties Ltd, owned by Mr Cullen, said helicopters had landed at the site for years and the pad was "purely incidental to the enjoyment of the main dwelling". Less than one trip a week was made. The helipad was "for domestic use" only and did not impact on adjoining properties or on protected views.

In fact, the submission said, a helicopter landing would have no more noise impact than farm machinery working in the area.

It urged the board to grant permission, adding it could impose conditions on the hours of operation and the number of flights.
