Work begins on Luas extension

WORK has begun on the first privately-funded extension to the Luas network.

Yesterday, work linking the 'Red' Tallaght line to Citywest began after a consortium of private developers agreed to meet the €40m cost.

The new line will have stops at Fettercairn, Cheeverstown, Citywest Campus, Fortunestown and Saggart, and will connect to the existing Red line between the Cookstown and Belgard stops.

The line is due to open by September 2009 and is being funded by Jim Mansfield of the Citywest Hotel, Citywest Business Park and Harcourt Developments.

Yesterday, CEO of the Citywest Group, Bernard O'Byrne, said the Government had not been asked to provide any funding and that the extension was "good news" for Citywest.

"We are also building 300 extra rooms, and have a new training area planned for rugby, soccer and GAA teams who stay in the Citywest Hotel. These are exciting developments for the Citywest Group."

Up to 5m people a year will use the route, and a park-and-ride facility is planned at Cheeverstown.
